Magic Bars (Hello Dolly Bars)

Magic Bars, also called Hello Dolly Bars, are a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing dessert — layered with chocolate, butterscotch, coconut, and pecans on a buttery graham cracker crust.

When you pour sweetened condensed milk over the top and bake, magic happens — they turn gooey, rich, and impossibly delicious.

These bars are perfect for gatherings, bake sales, or when you just need something sweet and easy.

Even better, you can customize them with your favorite mix-ins — think white chocolate, dark chocolate, or chopped nuts — and make them your own.

With only a handful of pantry ingredients and a few minutes of layering, these bars come together effortlessly for a dessert everyone will love.

For the Magic Bars Base

  • Butter – Melted salted butter creates a rich, buttery crust as the foundation of these bars.
  • Graham Cracker Crumbs – These form the crust and add a sweet, toasty flavor.

For the Toppings

  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips – Bring classic chocolatey goodness to every bite.
  • Butterscotch Chips – Add a warm, caramel-like sweetness that pairs perfectly with chocolate.
  • Shredded Coconut – Gives the bars a chewy texture and sweet coconut flavor.
  • Pecans – Chopped for a nutty crunch and added richness (you can swap for other nuts if you prefer).
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk – The “magic” that binds all the layers together and makes them gooey and rich.
  • Sea Salt (optional) – A sprinkle on top to balance all the sweetness with a touch of salt.

  • 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prep:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper and lightly coat with nonstick spray.
  2. Make the Crust:
In a medium bowl, mix melted butter and graham cracker crumbs until well combined.
Press the mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form a crust.
  3. Layer the Goodies:
Sprinkle chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, shredded coconut, and pecans evenly over the crust.
  4. Add the Magic:
Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the entire surface.
If needed, use the back of a spoon or a butter knife to gently spread it to the edges.
Optional: Sprinkle with sea salt for a sweet-salty touch.
  5. Bake:
Bake for 25 minutes, or until the top is set and the edges are golden brown.
  6. Cool & Cut:
Let bars cool completely in the pan before lifting them out using the parchment paper.
Cut into 20 squares and enjoy!

  1. Can I make Magic Bars without coconut?
Yep! If coconut isn’t your thing, just leave it out. You can swap it for more chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, or even chopped nuts. Easy fix, same delicious result.
  2. Do Magic Bars need to be refrigerated?
Nope! These bars are totally fine at room temp. Just pop them in an airtight container and they’ll stay fresh for about a week — if they last that long!
  3. Can I freeze Magic Bars?
Absolutely! Let them cool, slice them up, and stash them in a container or wrap them tightly. They’ll freeze beautifully for up to 3 months. When you’re ready, just thaw at room temp.
  4. How do I know when they’re done baking?
Watch for the edges to get golden and the center to look set — still a tiny bit gooey is perfect because they firm up as they cool. Trust the process!
  5. Can I mix up the toppings?
100%! These bars are super flexible. Swap out the chips for white chocolate, dark chocolate, or peanut butter chips. Toss in chopped Oreos, marshmallows, or any nut you love. Make them your own — no rules here!
